Personal Projects: Story 1

I have been asked more times than I can count if I read Eat, Pray Love and although I have, my life has been quite different from the stories of food, meditation and love. What she and I do have in common, however, is that I have spent the last few years of my life traveling the world. I have photographed my way through Southeast Asia, India, Europe, Central America and the US and looked into the eyes of more people than most do in a lifetime. I did not travel for the purposes of money or accelerating my photography career--I went for myself and found who I really was as a result. And it is now that I realize what a divine gift that is--when you do something for the pure love of it with no expectation of anything in return.

What I did receive is a sense of community. I know now that I have as much in common with Mang in Vietnam as I do with gypsies in Bosnia or Aparna in India. My place is not where I live, how much money I make or who I know--none of these things define who I am or who anyone is for that matter. My place is firmly inside of myself and I found that universality of place in the eyes of every person that I was privileged to photograph from around the world. So mostly, this series is for them and for the spirit of just living for the love of it with no expectation of anything at all...
